Upscale Italian near Union Market. Amazing date night at Masseria, Nicholas Stefanelli’s swanky NoMa digs. We arrived right on time, which is unusual for me, only to discover that I had plugged in the wrong date on Open Table when I made the reservation the night before (I was wondering why it was so easy to get one).
The Maître d’ was beyond gracious, accommodating us with a lovely two-top in the center of the dining room. Food (think minimalist Italian) was delicious, service was impeccable, and the scene was elegant, including the subdued but enthusiastic crowd of guests.
Tips: stick to the prix-fixe menu (three or four courses), which is incredible. Those little extras (e.g. a little pre-wine bubbly, those truffles on your risotto, and the “is it really necessary” after dinner drink) add up. Also, be sure to check out the place’s outside seating around fire pits in the warmer months – the surrounding wooden enclosure adds a clubby feel that is oh so St. Tropez!
