Shine Bright Like a (Pink) Diamond

Street style, especially NY street style, is such a great source of inspiration! Take this look, for example. I was in SoHo the other day when I saw this incredibly chic (European, I assumed) woman wearing an oversized silver jacket. I never thought that I would find anything like it in the US, until I came across this very similar style at Nordstrom.

The jacket is definitely an eye-catching statement piece. It can be dressed up (with an otherwise all black outfit, for example) or down, as it is here with distressed jeans like these from H&M. For this look I kept rest of the details on the classic side, like this simple grey cashmere turtleneck and lady-like pink accessories like this clutch and these shoes (similar here and here) to match the pink faux shearling on the jacket.

My fashion inspiration wore her silver jacket with baggy jeans, flat booties, and retro cat-eye glasses – a super edgy, quirky look that fit her perfectly. I could never pull that exact look off, but that’s the point.    Fashion inspirations, like any other inspiration, should be appropriated and personalized, but never copied (even if they are reeeeeeallly good). Do you, but try to do it well.

Red-bel Rebel

This (above) is what I would look like if someone were to call me a “preppy.”  For the record, I never was – I was already wearing mostly black in the 80s when being a preppy was actually a thing.  That said, I do love a great classic piece, like this cute blazer that I picked up on sale last winter at JCrew.

The color combo really pops, and I love the details like the gold buttons and the contrasting lining that shows if you roll up the cuffs.  I found this version of the same blazer (the “Rhodes”) that has a similar feel.

I wanted this would-be preppy blazer/shirt/jeans combo to have a bit of an edge to it, so I chose pieces with their own twist on classics. This white button-down by Parisian designer of the moment Marie Marot has a cute frill detail on the collar, and I love the rebellious feel of these crop flare jeans with frayed hems.

Red is my favorite color, and I would wear these boots every day if I could. I can’t, but when the right outfit happens, they are magic! They work so well with this bag with the red arabesque overlay.  Granted, there’s a lot going on in terms of colors and textures and I may even be breaking one or two rules of fashion, but what can I say? I’m a rebel.
